There is an effort to try and make this post-season Invitational relevant again after years of disinterest.

It was held at Cal's Edwards Stadium last weekend. There were some "glitches" that need to be smoothed out, but hopefully this Invite will become prestigious again in time, and attract top preps from all over the Nation.

Back in the day, I can remember watching Greenwich, CT high-schooler, Ceci Hopp run at Hughes Stadium in Sacramento in 1980 at Golden West. She had won the Kinney (now Footlocker) National CX Championships that year and went on to become an NCAA Champion in the 3000m at Stanford in 8:57 She qualified for the Olympic Trials in three events in 1992 and 1996 and won the USA Track and Field national championship in the 5,000-meter run in 1994.

Golden West attracted incredible talent from across the country (like Ceci) and the kids were flown in to Sacramento, all-expenses paid.
It was an amazing meet!

If it can regain just half of it's luster from the hay-days of Track & Field, it should once again become very successful. Travel stipends are being offered once again. If anyone knows of a sponsor that would like to get involved for next year's Golden West, please don't hesitate to contact meet management.

I concur that we need a meet like Golden West (and Great Southwest) to be successful as a post-season showcase for top athletes west of the Rockies. If you take a look at the results of the New Balance Nationals, it really isn't a "national" meet, for whatever reasons, but it is really a showcase for athletes from the Midwest and East Coast. Hopefully the Golden West can attract deeper competition in the next couple of years with the travel stipends and the change to a world class venue.
