That was the rule they could carry them if they had a DR. note but I haven't checked in a few years.

I do the one season for both with my first year athletes also. So far they have usually choose running.

I agree about the dual meets. I have had athletes run to the meet and do the 800/4x4 and had others do repeats on the track before the meet starts. I haven't had the depth some years to do do that...
