    2014 first look-small schools

So I was reading the posting for 2014 first look... and I was wondering two things:
#1 where is the love for the small schools?
#2 where is the love for girls teams?

so I decided to start a thread for the small school (both Div. IV & Div. V), both boys and girls... let the predictions start!

Boys D4 will very competitive next year. The top 9 teams all bring back a majority of their team. Salesian and J Serra will be favored going into the season, Xavier will also be tough to beat if they developed a solid #5. Hopefully my boys will be in the mix.
On the girls side I see the top 4 teams from last year being the top 4 again. J Serra bring back a strong 4, Laguna brings back 7 of their top 9, Big Bear brings back 6 of their 7 and Harvard Westlake has 5 coming back.
This should be an exciting year!

so I started the Div. V research... ladies first, from the state meet this is what I found:

Branson (State champ) from NCS only returns 2 (19:48, 20:32) looks like we will have a new Div. 5 state champ this season
    Central Valley Christain (State Runner-Up) from CS returns 6 (18:52, 19:18, 19:56, 20:13, 20:33, 22:33)
    Flintridge Prep (State 3rd place) from SS returns 5 (19:40, 19:48, 19:49, 20:12, 21:34)
    Lick Wilmerding (state 4th place) from NCS returns 5 (20:17, 20:34, 20:40, 20:43, 20:54)
    Woodcrest Christian (state 6th place) from SS returns 6 (19:18, 20:56, 21:02, 21:15, 21:15, 22:06)
    University (SF) (state 7th place) from NCS returns 4 (20:32, 20:56, 21:48, 21:59)
    Athenian (State 8th place) from NCS returns 6 (20:11, 20:27, 21:14, 22:15, 22:57, 22:55)
    Thacher (State 9th place) from SS returns 4 (21:02, 21:12, 21:44, 21:46)
    Urban (SF) (State 10th place) from NCS returns 6 (21:00, 21:05, 21:38, 21:59, 22:10, 22:11)
    St. Margarets (State 11th place) from SS returns 6 (20:35, 21:07, 21:40, 23:08, 24:33, 25:40)

Between state finalist 12-18 no one returns more than 4, state finalist #19 La Jolla Country Day returns 6, but only one runner under 19, and their next best over 22:30

And now for the Div. 5 guys... what teams are returning from the state meet:

St. Joseph Notre Dame (State Champs) from NCS returns 5 (16:10, 16:29, 16:30, 17:41, 18:13)
    Marin Academy (State Runner-Up) from NCS returns 5 (15:25, 16:42, 16:57, 17:47, 18:39)
La Jolla Country Day (State 3rd place) from SDS returns 4 (16:16, 16:48, 17:44, 18:31)
    Flintridge Prep (State 4th Place) from SS returns 5 (15:41, 16:38, 17:46, 18:11, 18:19)
    Woodcrest Christian (State 5th place) from SS returns 6 (16:14, 16:55, 17:17, 17:37, 17:39, 18:37)
    Lick Wilmerding (State 6th place) from NCS returns 5 (17:02, 17:28, 17:31, 17:40, 19:11)
    Thacher (State 8th place) from SS returns 6 (16:55, 17:06, 17:38, 18:14, 18:16, 18:24)
    Dester Christian/Lancaster (state 9th place) from SS returns 6 (16:50, 17:16, 17:26, 17:51, 17:52, 19:16)
    St. Margarets (State 12th place) from SS returns 7 (16:03, 17:43, 17:49, 17:53, 18:07, 18:15, 18:32)

many teams from 13th place to 20th place return 4-6 runners, but after St. Margaret's it a significant drop off from the front runner and #5 runners times from those teams compared to the top 12

Division 4 Boys - I based these rankings looking at returners and times on the track.
    1. Salesian - #1 Navarro ran 15:21 on Mt Sac, next 3 under 17:00, #5 at 17:13.Navarro and Garcia ran well on the track getting under 10 in the 3200, and 4:27, 4:37 in the 1600. Banuelos really improved on the track running 4:34 in the 1600---17:41 at Mt Sac. This team has some horses and is my preseason favorite.
    2. Laguna Beach - 3 under 10 minutes in the 3200, #4 at 10:02, 5th at 10:23. Strongest team on the track. On Mt Sac, #1 under 16:00, 3 under 17:00, #5 at 17:32. Need #5 to improve. See if the track times carries over to cross country. If so, they could battle for #1.
    3. Xavier Prep - 4 returners under 17:00 at Mt Sac, No returners under 10:00 in the 3200, if they develop #5...would be a nice tight pack.
    4. J Serra – Solid #1, #2 runners. Mariconda returning with a 15:56, and Burkhardt 15:59 on Mt Sac, 9:35, 9:44 in the 3200. #3 is at 16:33 on Mt Sac, but 11:14 in the 3200. #4 17:02 on Mt Sac, with #5 at 17:13. Pretty solid team with a great 1-2 punch.
    5. Harvard Westlake – Pretty nice team returning. #1 at 16:10 at Mt Sac. If Weissenbach returns healthy, they could be a top 3 team. #2-5 between 16:34-17:20. A lot of upside for HW…I’m sure they’ll be in the hunt for a title.
